Insurance for Your “Fun Vehicles”: What You Need to Know

Motorcycles, RVs, golf carts, four-wheelers, and now electric scooters are all about freedom, convenience, and enjoying your downtime, but they also come with real risk. One of the most common misconceptions we see is the assumption that these vehicles are automatically covered under a homeowners or auto policy. In many cases, they’re not. If you own any type of recreational or alternative-use vehicle, it’s important to understand where your coverage actually exists and where gaps could leave you exposed.

Why These Vehicles Are Different

Unlike your primary vehicle or home, these assets are often used in a variety of ways: on your property, off your property, on the road, or in shared spaces like neighborhoods, campgrounds, trails, or city streets. That flexibility is exactly what creates complexity from an insurance standpoint.  For example, an ATV or four-wheeler may have limited or no coverage once it leaves your property. A golf cart might not be covered depending on where you’re operating it. The reality is that many of these vehicles require their own policy to properly address both liability and physical damage.

Motorcycle Insurance

Motorcycles often share similarities with auto insurance but come with unique risks, especially when it comes to injury exposure and seasonal use.

A motorcycle policy can provide:

  • Liability coverage for injuries or damage to others

  • Physical damage coverage for theft, accidents, or weather

  • Coverage options for accessories, gear, and custom equipment

Even if the bike isn’t ridden year-round, maintaining coverage helps avoid gaps and keeps protection in place.

RV Insurance

RVs fall somewhere between auto and homeowners insurance because they function as both a vehicle and a living space. Depending on the type of RV and how it’s used, coverage may include:

  • Liability protection for driving exposures

  • Coverage for belongings inside the RV

  • Protection for attached equipment and structures

Liability becomes especially important when the RV is parked and being used as a temporary living space or when used off-premises.

Golf Cart Insurance

Golf carts are one of the most overlooked exposures, especially in neighborhoods and planned communities. Coverage often depends on:

  • Whether the cart is street-legal

  • Where it is being driven

  • How it is being used (personal vs. community use)

A dedicated policy ensures you have liability protection if someone is injured or property is damaged—something a homeowners policy may not fully address.

Four-Wheelers (ATVs) and Off-Road Vehicles

ATVs, UTVs, and similar vehicles carry significant risk, often more than people realize. Key concerns include:

  • Limited coverage off your property

  • Liability exposure for passengers or guests

  • Theft and damage, especially when stored outside or transported

Standalone policies can provide both liability protection and coverage for the vehicle itself.

Electric Scooters

Electric scooters have quickly become more common, especially in neighborhoods, college areas, and urban environments. Because they’re small and often seen as low risk, they’re one of the most frequently misunderstood exposures. Here’s where issues typically come up:

  • Many homeowners policies do not clearly extend liability to motorized scooters

  • If used on public roads or shared paths, coverage becomes even more uncertain

  • Injuries involving pedestrians, vehicles, or property damage can still result in significant liability claims

Unlike bicycles, electric scooters often fall into a gray area because they are motorized but not always insured like a vehicle. In many cases, coverage depends on:

  • The scooter’s speed and classification

  • Where it’s being used (private property vs. roadway)

  • The specific language of the homeowners or auto policy

That uncertainty is exactly why it’s worth reviewing, especially if the scooter is used regularly.

Liability Matters Most

Across all of these vehicles, the biggest exposure isn’t the vehicle itself- it’s liability. If someone is injured while riding with you, or if you cause damage to someone else’s property, those costs can add up quickly. Without the right policy in place, those expenses could come out of pocket. In many situations, it’s also important to make sure these exposures align with your umbrella policy so everything works together.  If you own any of these “fun” or utility vehicles, it’s worth asking:

  • Is this actually covered on my current policies?

  • Does that coverage apply everywhere I use it?

  • Do I have enough liability protection if something goes wrong?

These details vary more than most people expect and they matter when it comes to claims. These vehicles are meant to be enjoyed, but they shouldn’t create unnecessary risk. The goal isn’t just to have insurance in place, but to understand how it works, where it applies, and how to close gaps before something happens.
